What Is Prayer And Who Does God Hear?
What is Prayer?
Prayer is the act of talking to God with a sincere desire to build a conscious and intimate relationship with Him, much like a child communicating with a loving father.
Prayer takes many forms—it’s not just about asking for things. It can be:
- Praising God for who He is.
- Thanking Him for His blessings.
- Interceding on behalf of others.
- Confessing your sins and seeking forgiveness.
- Submitting your will to His divine plan.
God is Love and is omniscient. He knows your thoughts and the condition of your heart even before you speak. Honesty is essential when you pray—whether you’re happy, sad, concerned, or even angry, share it openly with Him.
Prayer has been described as the highest use of speech, and to grow as a Christian, prayer should be a daily habit. Don’t limit it to crisis moments—make it a continual conversation with God.
Psalm 116:2 says:
“Because He turned His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live.”
God desires fellowship with us, as illustrated in Revelation 3:20:
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with Me.”
Who Does God Hear?
During one Bible study, we uncovered five key scripture references that answer this question:
1. God Hears the Humble
Luke 18:9-14 shares a parable of two men who prayed:
- A Pharisee boasted of his righteousness.
- A tax collector, with humility and remorse, prayed, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Jesus concluded:
“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
2. God Hears the Righteous
Psalm 34:15-17 reminds us:
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry… The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles.”
3. God Hears Those Who Fear Him
Psalm 145:18-19 declares:
“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.”
4. God Hears Those Who Please Him
1 John 3:21-22 promises:
“Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from Him anything we ask, because we keep His commands and do what pleases Him.”
5. God Hears Those Who Abide in Him
John 15:7 teaches:
“If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
Final Thoughts
Prayer is more than a practice—it’s a lifeline that connects us to the heart of God. He listens to those who approach Him with humility, righteousness, reverence, and a desire to abide in His will.
Let prayer be a part of your life today and every day!
